Board Meeting, January 13^th, 2009

Taboo

Ashton says everything contingent on hearing back from Sin City management. Lady Rose has prepared business cards (with web address and with voicemail number). Lady Rose will deliver MVK business cards to site. Peter will bring flyers and email signup sheets. Lady Rose has MVK board member badges. No laptop or projector show. Peter handles getting a flat of water and banner from Capri storage on Jan 14^th.

 

Board members should email availability of booth staffing to Ashton.

 

Peter suggested that, if MVK does 2010 Taboo, have our own contact with Taboo management, instead of going through Sin City.

 

Feb 7^th planning

Whip group 10am-12pm, no equipment

Volunteers arrive at 12 noon for setup

Rope gathering 3pm-5pm, more of a social thing, but some education by Prof. Oni. Suggested donation: $5-10

Sherri wants to know about purchasing food for snack bar and budget, including dried meats, nut packs. Snack bar should net ~$100-$150 per night.

Snack bar open during afternoon rope event.

 

Community “potluck” or “dinner”? Community BYO potluck? “Dinner with friends” Bring your own food. NOT a potluck. We will provide coffee and tea. Will be a microwave on site, one way or another.

 

Board meeting versus open board meeting versus “meet the board” event? Meet the board event in evening.

 

2 suspension frames? Our good one + Prof. Oni’s suspension frame.

 

Spencer will demonstrate how to use suspension frame for more than just fisting.

 

Heat issue from January. Capri claims there is nothing wrong with heating. They will look into it. Spencer says we should start heating up as early as possible.

 

Amber will set up electric heater for lobby, plus curtaining.

 

Work party to put wheels on the storage devices? Will be on morning of February 7^th, starting at 10am. By Spencer

 

Lube purchase: Was going to go through Jennifer S, but after ginger incident, probably not a good idea. Peter will talk to Art of Loving about single use pack sponsorship. Spencer will talk to WomynsWare about lube. Lady Rose will do Little Sisters and Priape.

 

Copyright versus “free” images in slideshow. Capri waives SOCAN fee for our use of the hall. We’re covered for use of music. Greg, Peter and Ashton should discuss this. Spencer wants to see more variety in images, bodies, roles. Lady Rose says she’s not concerned about this. Peter has means of finding “free” images.

 

Membership

Peter suggests reserving equipment as a membership privilege might be more trouble than it is worth. Lady Rose says volunteer hours will offset that.

Discussion of costs of mailing hard-copy newsletter. Draya mentions Canada Post increased recently. Could cost $15 per person per year to do. Lady Rose suggested $20 extra fee for hard-copy email.

Spencer: we are at a “hard philosophical point.” Does different grades of membership generate divisions within the community? Will membership fees be a significant source of revenue? Not a major source of revenue. Lady Rose says each event should be financially self-sufficient, and membership revenue should go to debt payment or long term investment. A sense of ownership for members, along with responsibility, should be an issue.

Problem of member discount with sliding scale admission. Keep it simple?

Will this policy be permanent, or subject to revision?

Needs a better cash system for VD front door, less confusing.

Peter suggests single tier membership.

Lady Rose suggests deadline on policy. Draya suggests more discussion. Spencer suggests subcommittee devoted to it. Particularly discuss at Dinner at Friends on Feb 7^th. Draya suggests inviting BJ, Tillie, Kai, former board and steering committee members. Peter: Announce on Fetlife and Facebook, publicly.

New Business

Draya requests using MVK storage at Capri to store personal items, as she might have no place to live at the end of January. Lady Rose approves, and we also offered other help to Draya.

Friends of Draya planning live sex show. MVK could be involved, but problem of legality of live sex performance. (Cf. Art of Loving controversy) Overlap with Libido territory? Is this our turf? Does this match our educational mandate? Is it part of BDSM? Lady Rose says we are at delicate point of organization, and could get in trouble. Also problem of medicinal use of marijuana at event.
